Despite the current emphasis on “hard” tech skills like coding, what companies really need are more candidates that possess the soft qualities – like empathy, listening, creativity and vision – that really make an organization great.

1.) Love of Learning

The world is a constantly changing place and the ability to adapt, grow and change with it is essential. Possessing a love of and willingness to learn, adapt and develop new skills will not only mean that you are a valuable member of the your team, it also means that you can bring a new perspective to your group.

To maintain your love of learning, think about what you are passionate about and work on a side, passion project. You could choose to take a class online, or even in person, to help enhance your skills and broaden your horizons.

2.) The Ability to Think Outside the Box

Creative thinking is another skill that is invaluable to a team. Think outside the box and don’t be afraid to share your ideas, no matter how off the wall they may be. You’ll be enriching the team environment and introducing others to a different approach and different perspective.

3.) Willingness to Collaborate

Do you love to collaborate? Possessing a willingness to collaborate will also help you become a great employee. That’s because, when you share and develop ideas in a collaborative way, your ideas will ultimately be stronger and more well-rounded.

4.) Empathy

Empathy is another soft skill that will make you an asset to your company or organization. By understanding how others think and feel, you are more likely to make better decisions, produce better products and interact with others in a more efficient way.

5.) A Positive Attitude

Perhaps most important, a positive ‘can-do’ attitude is an asset to any team. Without being too saccharine sweet, a cheery, optimistic approach to any task will not only brighten your day, but will also inspire others to adopt a similar positive attitude.
